1. Australia wins Hockey Champions Trophy 2018
India lost 1-3 to Australia (defending champion) via penalty shoot-off in the summit clash of the final edition of the prestigious Champions Trophy title at Breda, the Netherlands.
The match went into the shoot-off after both the teams were locked at 1-1 in regulation time.
India won their second consecutive silver medal, the Netherlands bagged the bronze beating Olympic champions Argentina 2-0.
Belgium finished fifth after beating Pakistan 2-1 in the penalty shoot-off after both the teams were levelled at 2-2 at the end of 60 minutes.
The 2018 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy was the 37th and the last edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for men held in Breda, Netherlands.
The tournament will be replaced by the Hockey Pro League (HPL) in 2019.
2. India clinch Kabaddi Masters title defeating Iran 44-26
Three-time world champions ‘India’ clinched ‘Kabaddi Masters title’ defeating Iran 44-26 in the summit clash in Dubai.
The ‘2018 Dubai Kabaddi Masters’ was a six-nation Kabaddi Masters series which was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 22-30 June 2018.
The tournament featured defending world champions India, Pakistan, Iran, Republic of Korea, Argentina and Kenya.
This was the first international kabaddi sports event to be witnessed in the UAE.
3. Wimbledon Tennis Championships begins in London today
Today, The Wimbledon Tennis Championships 2018 (132nd-edition) will begin in London.
The grass court Major Wimbledon Tennis Championships is the third Grand Slam tournament of the year after the ‘Australian Open’ and the French Open.
The Swiss great Roger Federer will be playing his 20th consecutive Wimbledon.
The 2018 Wimbledon Championships is a Grand Slam tennis tournament which took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom.
4. Lee Chong Wei wins Malaysian Open Badminton singles title
Malaysian veteran Lee Chong Wei (35-year) has won the Malaysian Open Badminton singles title for a historic 12th time in the men’s final in Kuala Lumpur.
He defeated young Japanese shuttler Kento Momota in straight games 21-17 23-21.
Lee executed a sensational attack strategy that left the rising star Momota confused and flat-footed.
In the women’s singles final, top seed Tai Tzu Ying (Taiwan) saw off China’s He Bingjiao 22-20, 21-11.
5. Andres Iniesta retires from Spain after World Cup loss to Russia
The elegant midfielder of Spain ‘Andres Iniesta’ retired from international soccer following the team’s loss to Russia in a penalty shootout at the World Cup.
Iniesta had also been key for Spain when it won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships with its tiki-taka style modelled on Barcelona’s ball-possession game.
Overall, Iniesta played 131 matches for Spain.
6. 1st July: National Doctor’s Day
The National Doctors’ Day is celebrated every year on 1st July in India to honour the legendary physician and the 2nd Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
This is a vital day for doctors as it provides them with an opportunity to reflect on their career and remind them about practising the art and science of Medicine and Surgery in an ethical manner.
Dr Roy was honoured with the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’.
7. CBDT extends the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar till 31st March 2019
The policy-making body of the tax department ‘Central Board of Direct Taxes’ (CBDT) has extended the deadline for the PAN-Aadhaar linking till 31st March 2019.
The CBDT had last extended the deadline in March this year.
This is the fifth time the government has extended the deadline for individuals to link their Permanent Account Number to biometric ID Aadhaar.
Existing Pan card holders were also required to complete the process to link their Aadhaar numbers.
Point to know
Last year, the union government had changed the income tax law to mandate that taxpayers quote their Aadhaar number to get a new PAN card and to file income tax returns.

8. Final Nepal-India EPG meeting ends
The two-day final meeting of the ‘Eminent Persons Group’ (EPG) on Nepal-India Relations concluded in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Representatives from Nepal & India deliberated upon various bilateral issues including 1950 Peace and Friendship treaty, trade, transit and border during the meeting.
The EPG is a joint mechanism consisting of experts and intellectuals from India & Nepal.
It was set up in February 2016 to make suggestions for updating all existing bilateral treaties and agreements between both the countries.
As per the agreement, the EPG is to consist of eight members with four members representing each side.
9. Govt forms panel to upgrade norms for computation of economic data
The union government has set up a 13-member committee headed by Ravindra H Dholakia (retired professor of IIM Ahmedabad) to upgrade the norms for computation of economic data at states and districts level in the backdrop of plans to revise the base year for National Accounts or GDP calculation.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation will change the base year to 2017-18 for the calculation of the GDP and IIP numbers from the current 2011-12 with an aim to capture changes in the economy.
The panel has been asked to review the concepts, definitions, classifications, data conventions, data sources and data requirements for preparation of State Domestic Product (SDP) and District Domestic Product (DDP) and to lay down revised guidelines.
It will also suggest measures for improving SDP and DDP in the country taking into consideration availability of data and requirements of the Centre and states/union territories.
10. The first meeting of Cauvery Water Management Authority to be held today
The first meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority was held in New Delhi to resolve the dispute among southern states.
The meeting of the nine-member Authority has been chaired by the Central Water Commission Chairman S Masood Hussain (also heading the Cauvery Authority).
The meeting will discuss the issues including water storage in Cauvery basin reservoirs.
The release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from Karnataka as per the schedule and duly complying with all aspects of the judgement of the Supreme Court in this regard.

11. Rahul Dravid, Ponting, Taylor inducted in ICC Hall of Fame
Rahul Dravid (Former Indian captains), Ricky Ponting (Australian legend) and retired England woman wicketkeeper-batter Claire Taylor have been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame for their stupendous achievements in international cricket.
Rahul Dravid (45-years) became only the fifth player (others player – Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble) from India to be named in the elite list.
Rahul Dravid scored 24,208 runs in 509 international matches in his nearly 16-year-long playing career.
As many as 87 cricketers are a part of ICC Hall of Fame.
The ICC Cricket Hall of Fame “recognises the achievements of the legends of the game from cricket’s long and illustrious history”.
On 2 January 2009, it was launched by the International Cricket Council (ICC) of Dubai in association with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), as part of the ICC’s centenary celebrations.
